Infinix Hot 9 series: smartphone review

The upgrade in smartphones lately has been amazing especially with the Infinix hot series. Infinix phones have a place in the heart of smartphone users just like other smartphone companies too. But they come with a wealth of sensors to facilitate better user experience. Infinix has unveiled new budget smartphones in the Indian market for price-conscious consumers. The Hot 9 Pro, Hot 9 and Hot 9 Play have been launched with identical specifications; however, the three smartphones offer slightly different camera hardware and battery capacity.

Infinix is a Hong Kong-based smartphone maker. The company claims to have R&D centers sprawling between France and Korea, with manufacturing center in China. The company makes smartphones that run the Android operating system. It was founded in 2013. The firm claims to have local subsidiaries in over 60 countries.

Let us first review the latest Infinix Hot 9. Sleek and beautiful. The Infinix Hot 9 was unveiled to the public at the time of the pandemic; when the novel Corona virus was ravaging some parts of the world with Nigeria inclusive. While the world was on total lockdown, Infinix mobility was in to thrill the world with stunning features for tech lovers.

However, the Infinix Hot 9 phone was first launched in India, as well as other variants called Hot 9 Pro and Hot 9 play respectively. But the choice of processor is the same with Hot 8, which bags the question; is Hot 9 a real upgrade, or is it some ridiculous compromise? Quite rhetorical though.

The Infinix Hot 9 phones have an accelerometer, which is a sensor that measures the titling motion and orientation of the phone. It also has a fingerprint scanner. This sensor identifies and authenticates the fingerprint of an individual in order to gain access to the phone. Also, Infinix Hot 9 comes with proximity sensor. This detects how close the phone is to an outside object. With a dual sim, Infinix Hot 9 is capable of business. It also supports fast charging technology, which is very handy.

Infinix did a pretty amazing job on the Hot 9, which is for many good reasons. It comes with a punch-hole camera at the rear, then a single LED flash on the left side of the earpiece.
The Infinix Hot 9 follows the design template that is common these days; it has a punch-hole display and a vertically-aligned rear camera module. What makes it slightly different from most smartphones is the color choices we get. There are two color options: Ocean Wave and Violet. The color options appear different but aren’t cringe-worthy. Although, they might be flashy for people who are more into basics. The device also features a gem-cut texture design at the back, which appears quite decent. Another thing good about the smartphone is that it doesn’t appear cheap.

The device also comes in Questzal Cyan, Midnight Black colors, it also has a camera module at the back that’s housing the triple LED flash, the fingerprint scanner, and the Infinix brand name. The left side of the device has a dedicated slot while the volume and power buttons are on the right side of the phone.
The hot 9 weighs 185g, the front is made from glass while the back is made from plastic.

Display / Screen
The Infinix Hot 9 comes with a 6.6 inches HD display and a resolution of 1600 X 720 Pixels and a ratio of 20.9, which leaves the smartphone at a ~266 PPI density. The device screen is bezel-less, so the screen to body ration is 82.8%. The screen is rated IPS LCD, which comes in 16m colours.
Software and Operating system
Infinix Hot 9 runs on Android 10 like the new Tecno Camon 15 Pro, and that makes these phones real competitors. The device runs on a MediaTek Helio A25 chipset, an Octa-core 4X1.8 GHz Cortex-A-53 CPU and a GPU that’s rated PowerVR GE8320. These make the device run pretty smoothly although it has a very little lagging, great gameplay experience for both low and high memory-intensive games.

On the memory front, the Hot 9 comes with a dedicated memory slot. It also comes with 4 GB RAM as the top memory variant, although users get to enjoy other variants with 3GB and 2GB RAMs respectively. The 4GB variants also have 64GB and 128GB variants, giving users amazing memory at amazing prices.

The phone comes with a respectable camera with top-notch features compared to other phones. The top variants of these smartphones come with a 16MP wide-angle lens, 2MP macro lens, 2MP depth, and a QVGA low light sensor. Making these cameras worth the money spent on the device.

Also, the device features a Triple-LED flash, which comes with panorama and HDR. You can record videos of 1080p at 30 frames per second (fps). In addition, the device comes with an 8MP wide selfie camera running videos of 1080 pixels at the same 30 fps as we find on the rear camera.

However, the Pro version features a 48-megapixel primary sensor and the standard one is equipped with a 13-megapixel main camera. The smartphone house an 8-megapixel selfie camera, which is accompanied by an LED flash. The device’s camera app has basic camera modes like AI Cam, Video, Beauty, Bokeh, HDR, and others.

As for the camera performance, the Infinix Hot 9 Pro offers slightly better shots, which is expected. You find that the Pro delivers slightly better details and sharpness in daylight. Also, shots taken by Hot 9 Pro have more accurate colors and better shadows, and highlights. In addition, the standard version adds a bit of drama to the scene and details are a tad soft too. Autofocus is mostly accurate. If you zoom in on a large screen, you might not be very pleased. But, the Hot 9 Pro at its price point captures good enough shots.

The Pro version does not oversaturate the colors, but the same is not the case with Hot 9. Unfortunately, the macro sensor that the company has added is of no use. It delivers poor shots, and you will get much better and clearer shots from the standard sensor. As mentioned above, here too, the Pro version offers a slightly better amount of detail and sharp edges. Also, colors don’t seem a bit washed out and Hot 9’s camera sometimes struggles with locking focus at close range.

The device houses a loudspeaker and a 3.5mm audio jack.

The device comes with fingerprint and face sensors at the rear. And other sensors we find useful are the accelerometer, gyro sensor, proximity sensor, and compass. The device also works fast when using the face and fingerprint unlock options, and that’s a plus for the Infinix Hot 9.

Battery capacity
Infinix phones amongst other low-budget smartphones in Nigeria offers the best battery deal.
The Hot 9 comes with a battery capacity of 5000mAh. The battery is also non-removable. With a full battery, it can fuel you nonstop for 29 hours on full use. Even while watching YouTube videos nonstop, playing powerful, memory-intensive and high graphic games, browsing the internet and having the internet on for the total of the 29 hours and playing music. Also, it comes with a Micro-USB port on the device for charging, which is especially disappointing given the fact that many budget phones now have USB Type-C ports. In addition, the company offers a 10W charger in the box. The Hot 9 has a 3.5mm headphone jack at the bottom with a loudspeaker grille.

Price in Nigeria
Infinix hot 9 sells for 79,000 Naira in Nigeria. Imagine having a low-budget phone with amazing features. You can also check for the Hot 9 price on Jumia, Konga, Slot, and Amazon. These websites always have up-to-date prices.

The smartphone sensors measure physical quantities and transmit them to the application processor. The phone’s accelerometer is also a built-in electronic component that measures tilt and motion. In addition, the fingerprint sensor is one of the easiest and most secure ways to protect your smartphone. The proximity sensor detects when a user is holding the phone near their face during a call and turns off the display to prevent keypad presses and battery consumption from the display. In addition, the Hot 9 Play has Dual SIM capability, which means that you can insert two different SIM cards and use them both from one phone.

Sensors: The sensors include: compass, Accelerometer, fingerprint, gyroscope, light, and proximity.
Specials: Fast charging

While the three smartphones have almost the same features, the Hot 9 Pro is a much better deal in terms of camera, which is the only differentiating factor. And Hot 9 Play is a better deal in terms of battery. The Pro version offers a decent set of daylight cameras, a big battery, a vibrant display, and the latest software.
For the money, we believe the Hot 9 is worth it. Powerful features with an amazing price. There are some problems with the screen as you might have noticed. But whatever the case, it’s a great device for its price point.
